There are days like today when my brain makes up this narrative that I have fallen behind in life. The proof it shows is how my friends and colleagues are getting married, starting families, buying houses, and doing all those things that organized adults who have their lives together do. I admit it generates irrational emotions like jealousy and inadequacy in me. On the other hand, I am also genuinely happy for these people. I am aware of the difficulties involved in taking these adult steps. I got a wedding invitation from one of my friends recently, and I told him honestly what was on my mind when I heard that news – that it’s wonderful he not only built a loving relationship with another person, but also managed to convince them to make this major life transition with him.
But everyone has their unique journey and milestones. Maybe my milestones aren’t going to be the exact same as others. I don’t know how my milestones look like, but I do know a few other things. For example, I know all the disappointments, rejections and heartbreaks I survived to be where I am today. I know people who look up to me personally and professionally. I know I faced these feelings of inadequacy multiple times before, and I know that I managed to rise above them every single time. I know I dreamed about getting out of my small town to build a life for myself, and now I am building my life in a foreign country. I know this life I am building is not perfect, at least by traditional standards of adult success, but I wouldn’t exchange any of it for something else. Actually, I lied, I could exchange my couch for a brand-new Canyon Endurance CF 7.
